Just before leaving for her freshman year at University of Colorado Boulder, "JC" left this note for her fellow baristas.
"In Detro crew,
I feel so stupid for saying that my job is going to be one of the hardest things for me to leave but it's true. I never expected to make a second family here. You've all changed my life for the better. I love you all so much! I'll see you soon, and in the meantime, I'm only a text away. Keep being you. With love, J"
JC - keep being you and know you are missed!
“In bocca al lupo!”
This phrase literally means “to be in the wolf’s mouth”. Italians use this expression to wish each other good luck. However, you are not allowed to respond to this phrase with a simple “thank you” or “grazie”. That would actually bring you bad luck! You are required to say “Crepi” or “Crepi il lupo”, which literally means “I hope the wolf dies”.
Caffè Sospeso - an Act of Kindness
Coffee in Italy is a gesture of kindness, whether towards yourself or your loved ones. The Neapolitan tradition of the caffè sospeso — which literally translates to “suspended coffee” is a testament to that kindness. Popularized during WWII, the caffè sospeso was an act of solidarity among the city’s working-class cafés. Customers would order two espressos at the bar and drink only one, leaving the second “suspended” for any future customers who couldn’t afford to pay for the luxury. This tradition was revitalized during the pandemic when visitors would leave coffees “suspended” for nurses, doctors, and other key workers.
Yes, they are. The grapes you saw growing over the pergola are indigenous to NJ. Red Concord grapes (yes, I know they’re jelly grapes) and Niagara green grapes. We planted them last year and they grew fabulously, providing shade and ambiance over our pergola. We had our first vendemmia (harvest) in August and are trying to make some homemade wine. Stay tuned!
